Planet Fitness is situated in the Radisson Blu Hotel complex at Rivonia Rd & Daisy Street, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2146, South Africa.

Access is free for Radisson guests and seemed to make up a fair prorportion of users, at least going by the sign-in sheet at reception.

First impressions: this is a big gym spread out over 3 floors and all eyes are directed within the atrium towards the swimming pool.

Practical matters: sweat towels are provided at sign-in which is on the middle floor; changing rooms for all genders are on the lowest floor (well signposted) where you can pick up a shower towel.  A sauna, showers, key code-operated lockers for clothes and valuables (separate) are in the changing area and at least one staff member seemed to be on duty at all times.

The gym was never busy the few times I used it, but that could have been my times.  It’s well air-conditioned, but I was conscious that Joburg is at a high elevation as normal exercise took just a little more effort.

There are a large number of cardio machines looking across at the healthy in-house cafe.  Some treadmills are situated at large picture windows looking across Sandton.

Although I didn’t get a picture of it, there is a running track (yes!) which is in a tunnel on the lower floor of the gym – it stretches out at the front of the hotel as a key feature.  It’s 250m and has a stop off point with spin cycles, yoga and stretching mats and light weights for those who feel the need.  I did use it and found it very strange to run in a tunnel!  The air conditioning must not have been working as well in this space as it felt very hot very quickly! Or maybe that’s just my lack of fitness!

The best way to unwind after working out is to use the lap pool.  Note: there are two pools at the Radisson – this one requires a swimming cap (and I say you need to bring your goggles).  It is set out for laps, so be prepared that this is not for playing about it.  However, happily you can use the outdoor pool for just that! And you don’t need to remember your swimming cap for that pool…

Review score: 8 out of 10 – only thing I’d change would be the friendliness of the reception staff, who, when they realise you are a hotel guest, could ask “do you need me to tell you where everything is located?”.
